5.4 Network Considerations
PCoIP does not require special network equipment or graphics drivers. Some form of
network connection brokering software is required, however.
The amount of network bandwidth required for remote graphics is entirely
dependent on the type of user and the software applications required. PCoIP
technology dynamically adjusts the data compression/quality based on available
network resources. PCoIP solutions can also be customized to share network
resources “unfairly,” favoring certain users over others.
The following table shows a rough estimate of the bandwidth required for different
user types with displays running at a variety of resolutions.
Table 5–1 Estimated Bandwidth Requirements Based on User Type and Display Resolution
User category 1024×768 1280×1024 1680×1050 1600×1200 1920×1200
Task Worker 3 Mbps 5 Mbps 7 Mbps 6 Mbps -
Knowledge Worker/Basic CAD 10 Mbps 15 Mbps 20 Mbps 22 Mbps 25 Mbps
Performance User/3D Modeling 30 Mbps 45 Mbps 60 Mbps 65 Mbps 80 Mbps
Video Editing - 60 Mbps 80 Mbps 85 Mbps 100 Mbps
Extreme Bandwidth Allocation - 120 Mbps 160 Mbps 170 Mbps 200 Mbps
Network latency should be less than 30 ms to ensure seamless remote responsiveness.
Both LAN and WAN setups are supported.
All PCoIP traffic is encrypted with 256-bit AES for the display and USB and SSL for
management and configuration traffic.
